It wasn't to prove the world was round, that was Magellan. He was looking for a trade route to Asia on behalf of the Spanish crown. Like answerer 2 said, he landed in the Caribbean and originally thought he had reached India.
Once it became clear to him that he hadn't found a route to Asia yet, his goals changed. Thus, on his later voyages, still in the service to Spain, he continued to look for a passage through the New World to Asia. He never found one, because there wasn't one.

Columbus was not interested in proving the world was round. Most educated people at that time knew that the world was round. What they did not know was how large it was and of course of the existence of more continents.
Columbus' goal on his first voyage was to secure an all water route to the Orient and thus partake in the rich trade that was available because of the high demand for the exotic goods from the Orient in the growing European economy.
