i was always told it was due to farming - so farmers could get an extra hour of light per day to grow crop etc...

[thats what i was told years ago - don't know if its right]

Not all of Europe does, but it's a tradition more than anything else; it's meant to enable farmers to work longer. But it's pretty much redundant now. Every year in the UK, some MP tries to bring a bill to stop it from happening.

it is all to do with the daylight hours. so that when kids and workers are out in the morning at winter there is more light so they move the clock backward in october then put it forward in march. they are planning on scraping it now.

due to equinoxes time is controled from London at Greenwhich hence GMT
