Because she's soulful. Her feet probably don't smell bad.

You don't spread athlete's foot when you're barefoot all the time. It's a fungus, it grows best in dark, damp places like the inside of a shoe; you're most at risk when you put your bare foot down in a locker room for just a few moments, then put your foot inside a dark closed sports shoe, and go exercise for a while getting all hot and sweaty! On the other hand, it has little to no chance to get a hold on your skin when your skin is bare -light, well-ventilated, dry (for even sweat or rain dry within minutes when you're no longer running or walking through puddles, contrary to a closed shoe that remains slightly damp for a long time). Going barefoot as much as possible is even part of the treatment suggested to people who already have athlete's foot!

It's sad there is so much of a bias against barefooting in the US. Only the US has as many signs requiring shoes in stores, those are rare in every other country including Europe & other 'Western' countries. Only the US has many people believing it's against Health Department laws to go barefoot in stores, which by the way isn't true (see source). This of course means many people believe it's gross or dangerous, but it isn't. There are NO health department rules requiring shoes anywhere. There are NO insurance companies requiring shoes for customers or even recommending them. Here in Europe, while barefooting in public is still rare for fashion reasons, there are few if any 'no shoes no service' signs, and almost everyone believes it's very healthy to go barefoot! This last is backed up by my own experience; ten years of barefooting, used to be sick all the time, now it's rare to even have minor sniffles. Kids go barefoot for PE normally here; yet they don't have a lot of athlete's foot. Know many other barefooters, several who *had* it and got rid of it after barefooting regularly and none who'd never had it and caught it. Unfortunately the myth that barefooting is so gross spreads more & is more persistant than the fungus itself! :-(

Shariam is correct, without the dark, damp, warm conditions, all the various fungus and bacteria can not survive. Even if Joss does step in athlete's foot left behind by a shoeless shodie, it can't take hold on her dry open feet. I've been barefoot for over 6 months and have caught nothing.
