This bee was at least an inch long, fat round body, all yellow (no black), banded bald abdomen, with bee like wings (and buzzing sound) and yellow legs tucked underneath. Small short antennae...i've looked online and it doesn't match any of the photos i've seen...the closest i got to identification was a drawing from a UK source the indicated it might be a queen or drone honeybee. But again, it was relatively hairless, and HUGE...and all bright yellow. Any ideas? I reminded me of a giant fat yellow beetle, but had the distinctive bee wings.

after hours of searching, i think i've come upon the answer. since i live in southern california, it's probably a male carpenter bee. they are yellow, have less hair than a honey bee, look very much like them, are prone to dry arid areas .. could be the valley carpenter with good possibility...

Is it a Cicada Killer? We had these huge things in our yard, I caught one and looked it up and it matched the Cicada Killer. They literally kill Cicadas and lay their eggs in their dead bodies to hatch. They look vicious too! They're huge! Check it out and see if it matches.

Don't know where you live, but it could be a Cicada Wasp or Cicada Killer Wasp. But, your description says it completely yellow. Cicada Wasp has black on in it.

It is huge, over and inch long, builds nests in tunnels. Hunts Cicadas, some people call them locust.

There is a insect native to this country, southern central north america tht the old timers called a 'newsbee' that hovered in one spot and when it moved it was a very fast flier.i can offer no further info but this may possibly give you a lead to follow.

Im pretty sure that its not even a bee. It may have prominant bee fetures but there are plenty of bugs that have bee wings and buzz. Try searching bug identifiers.

Look up Cicada Killer photos. That might be it. We had experience with them a few yrs ago, but had never seen them before or since. They are huge and look like giant wasps.

Your description won't really do the trick.

If you caught it (and you live in the US) contact your local USDA cooperative extention.

If you don't have one near you, your local university may be useful if there are professores of Entomology in any of the Science departments.

I have no idea I don't like bee's. Maybe take a pic of it and take it to a bee keepers place and see what they say. If you can not find it on the internet
