i am 5ft4 and ride a 13hh pony. I'm about 9st and feel very heavy on him although he is cobby. In photos i only have a couple of cms left before my legs go past his belly. My friends say i look fine but i disagree.

no you are OK where i live in Hampshire we have the new forest and wild ponies running free once a month they are heard ed up and sold the men and women who heard the ponies up the correct name for this is a drift ride broken in new forest ponies to heard up the wild ponies the ridden ponies are forest pones and range from 13 hands to 14 hands and some of the people who ride them are 6 foot tall they are not heavily built but the ponies have no trouble galloping around with these people on there backs if your pony is happy do not worry

If hes cobby you shouldnt have a problem. My legs go past my horse belly, Im not to big for him.. Iv just got long legs!

If it helps as a comparason.. I have a cobby 13.2hh Im 5´9ft and 9 stone and alough I dont ride him much now I have a bigger horse. He still carries me fine when I go out hacking and run off for a gallop.

If you still concerned, try to stick a photie up on here and ask people.

But honestly I dont think you have any thing to worry about!

Hi, Cobs are very strong horses and can carry alot of weight! Don't worry about your legs oing past his belly - your light and he's a cob! I was probably a bit taller than you and only a tiny bit lighter ridning a 12.3hh welsh pony - no one else could ride him he has so much energy - if i was too heavy he wouldn't have kept jumping with me! Is he very old? People used to be funny about where your feet come on a horse and used to say that when they were out of the stirrups if yur feet came to their knees then you were too big for them, i disagree - your light he's a cob - your legs aren't even past his belly - i compete alot and see alot of people now adasy riding horses with thier feet past the ponys bellys i don't think it looks weird - normal!

whilst you may feel quite big for your pony - as long asyou're only using him for casual fun riding - and not competing (you'd knock the jumps down with your legs!!) I can assure you your pony is well able to carry your weight! When you think about the fact that shetland poines were used to carry men back in the days of mining due to their surefootedness and compact size - trust me you are well within the weight limit for your pony!

One of my friend is so big on her pony that she can touch his knees with her feet. But, they are the best pair you will EVER see. They are really friends and this pony will do anything for her. If you guys get along, don't worry about if you fit or not. A good pony is never something you give up, even though you may be a bit big for him :-).

It partly depends on how much work you give your pony. If you just ride out occasionally you are probably ok. On the other hand if you are competitive, want to jump at any height or ride him for long hours of fast work then you may prefer something bigger. It sounds to me as though he is up to your weight. But how comfortable you feel is important.

crofters in scotland ride and work shetland ponies, as long as youre not demanding too much of your pony and you are comfortable riding him and obviously the horse is not showing any signs of duress cant see wats wrong with it. if you feel uncomfortable on him let someone else ride him and maybe try riding a bigger horse yourself, its up to you as long as the pony is fine and they generally let you know when they've had enough lol

No you are not too tall, nor are you too heavy.

I used to work with horses of all different sizes, and the riders were all different heights and weights. As long as you are comfortable and able to be able to nudge him on o.k. without difficulty, and don't feel top heavy.
You don't say how old you are, so it is difficult to know as to whether you are going to grow a lot more, but if you do you could progress on to a larger Cob.

If he is a cobby pony he can easily carry your weight so don't worry. On the other hand, if you feel uncomfortable on him you could consider selling him and getting a bigger one!

Your legs should be aboutr flush with his belly when you are sitting on his back without stirrups. It sounds to me that he is a good size for you at the moment and you are definately not too heavy for him especially as you say he is a cob-type.
