D. They were indeed seeking the opportunity to practice their "purer" form of religion. They sprang from the Church of England, which still had some statues, colorful vestments, and carved decorations in the churches. They also celebrated Christmas and Easter as festivals. The Puritans wanted to rid the church of everything that didn't come straight out of the Bible. They believed that the commandment against making graven images had been flouted by the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, that neither Christmas nor Easter should be celebrated as the original churches did, since pagan rituals had been grafted onto them. And in England, they had been first persectuted for their beliefs and then, under Oliver Cromwell, had taken over the governing of the country. Once Charles II had been invited to resume the monarchy, the Puritans were out of fashion again and wanted their own place to govern and worship as they chose.
