think of an engine as a giant air pump,thats all it is really.air has to go in to be compressed to make power,the spent gases have to be evacuated from the engine,this is your exhaust.so on most engines,you have a intake manifold(incoming air) and a exhaust manifold(outgoing air)

Exhaust manifolds, which are the exits for the already used up fuel that has been transformed into a gas. They are bolted directly to the engine.

Oh yeah and intake, I was picturing a V8 engine with one EXHAUST manifold on each side.

you have an intake which lets good air go in and an exaust that blows the bad air out the tailpipe.
