Labour is different for every woman, and pinpointing when it begins is not really possible. It's more of a process than a single event, when a number of physiological changes in your body work together to help deliver a baby. If you're truly in labour, one or more of the following five things will happen:

• Your cervix will become progressively thinner and softer (also called effacement) and dilated - up to 10 centimetres.

• Contractions occur at regular and increasingly shorter intervals and become longer and stronger in intensity.

• You may have persistent lower back pain, often accompanied by a crampy premenstrual feeling.

• You may notice the appearance of a bloody show (a brownish or blood-tinged mucus discharge). If you pass the mucus plug that blocks the cervix, labour could be imminent - or it could be several days away. Still, it's a sign that things are moving along.

I think it's deffo best to let your midwife know how you are feeling. In my experience doctors arn't much help.

If these feelings are uncomfortable I'd try some very gentle exercise (unless you've been told not you) perhaps a nice walk with your partner and your first born. Then a nice relaxing bath, the pains sounds similair to mine before I had my little one, think it was just my body was so achey after nine months.

Even if this is the first time you have gone into labour naturally I wouldn't worry hun! You're body will tell you what to do and when baby's ready!

Good luck with everything and let us know how you get on!

Unfortunately the answer to this question is...how long is a piece of string!!

Some possible first signs to look for:

restless feeling,
a show (mucous plug, sometimes bloody),
waters breaking (but sometime not till in labour)
'the runs' nature's way of cleaning you out ready
period style pains in the stomach or back
reduced movements from baby (but these should be checked out in case it is something else)

But either way it's impossible to tell how long from any of this signs, if at all, it will be before labour is in full swing....

You can try traditional methods to help labour along though! (raspberry leaf tea, sex, hot curry...)

Your baby will be here soon enough! Good luck and congratulations :o)

God. I know how badly you'll want it to be labour!! Being induced 2 weeks late is no fun is it? My dream is to have this one around 36 weeks - 38 weeks!
You'll only know for certain when you are getting regular, sustained contractions. Even then they might stop for a few hours ( hate to say it or a couple of days ). Good luck though, hope you go early!

I was exactly the same as you. First child induced. Second child went into labour naturally three weeks early but had no idea! I just felt 'weird' somehow different. i had my midwife give me an internal and warned me it would stimulate my labour. And oh boy! Did it! We knew the baby was a good size so her being slightly prem didn't matter. Believe me, when it happens you'll know all about it. Good luck - best wishes to you and yours.

could be the start of labour. if its the case either your waters will break or contractions will start. could be any time before you know for definate if you are worried ring the hospital where you are booked in to have you baby, tell them how you feel as you have not had labour start itself and that last time you was induced, they may ask you to come into hospital for a check up but most likly they will tell you to relax have a bath and wait for some more signs that you are in labour before coming in
GOOD LUCK

Honey, I don't think anyone can really answer this one. As you know by now, babies come when they are ready. Call your doctor and tell them what is going on and they will advise you what to do. They of course have a better grip on the situation than we do. I am sure you are getting close. Just sit back, try to relax, or take a warm bath, get ready for the event, and enjoy as much as you can before the pain starts, then breath, breath, breath. Soon it will all be over and your little bundle of joy will be in your arms and ready for your love and care. Good luck and congrats!!!

I had that the day before I was enduced, just walk alot, dont go alone but walk, it will help it go faster. You could have these small contractions for up to a week before you go into labor. Congrats! Just dont push yourself too hard. Also talk with you doctor if its ok to start walking, I know you said 38 weeks but some doctors prefer that you wait it out as long as possible. You may also just be experiencing the "baby dropping" meaning your uterus is getting down into your pelvis farther, this is also to help your labor.... Good luck, and congrats!

If you are concerned about yourself or the baby, get yourself down to your Hospital to be checked.

Whats the worst that can happen? Its a false alarm.

You would be surrounded by the medical staff that you would need and it may be an easier labour as your being seen to earlier.

Go To The Hospital.

Good Luck and advance Congratulations on the birth of your second child!
