Hi.
I have a Compaq laptop which has a processor speed of 1600MHz and currently has a 256Mb stick of RAM inside.
I was wanting to add some RAM to one of the spare slots in my laptop, but my PC info tells me that my laptop's total capacity is only for 256Mb of RAM.
Would I be tempting trouble if I add another 256Mb of RAM in the spare slot, thus giving me 512Mb altogether? IS the computer likely to work ok still?

If your PC Information tells you that your maximum limit is 256 KB, then don't add any more. It will cause your system to malfunction until you remove it, so I would say it is not worth buying another RAM since you cannot use it.

Why would you want to? Use the money to buy a new computer the day after Thanksgiving this year. It'll have a LEAST 1 or 2 Gig of RAM. Knowing how manufacturer's operate they did NOT put 1 256mb stick in and leave an open slot, they used both slots and put in 2x128mb sticks in (much cheaper for them).

It all depends upon you laptop's age, mother board, etc. Look into the manual that came with your laptop to make sure if you can add RAM or you cannot. Usually laptops do not provide additional slots but you may be able to remove the old cards and insert new ones. However, I would suggest you contact Compaq, give them all data of your laptop and ask them for their recommendation.

The Intel internet web site for the GMA 950 chipset says that as a lot as 244MB of shared reminiscence could properly be allotted. you are able to both replace this contained in the BIOS, or if it truly is unavailable, you are able to improve the RAM.

Sounds like an older laptop. If your documentation says 256MB is the limit, then you are asking for problems.
