I am afraid of moving on escalators, but once I have my feet there I am okay until I have to go on another one.
I know I have to do it, for a child reward her each time, gradually diminishing the rewards for this behavior.
Try it and let me know how it works.

The same way you would act if the child is afraid of anything else that's unreasonable - you take them by the hand and put them on the escalator. Tell him Barney's at the top or something. Geez my mom raised 5 kids and we didn't have the luxury of voicing an opinion about silly stuff like this.

try the elevator or walk up the stairs. Maybe the child saw someone get their shoe caught in an escalator or is afraid because it is machinery. You know kids have that extra sense that adults seem to have lost. Don't push the child but instead let them learn and mature and it will be their choice as to whether to use that mode or not, or to get over their fear. In the meantime, be understanding.

That is a good question... if you find the answer, let me know ok! I am an adult who has never been able to get on an escalator in my life.. I am nearly 50 now... my kids and my grandkids have all tried to help me overcome this fear and I have never been able to get on one! I will do stairs or an elevator instead! :0)

Don't force it. Is the child young enough to be held in your arms while you're on the escalator? To a little kid, seeing the steps disappearing might make him or her think they'll disappear, too.
