Everything would depend on the state that you would like to teach in. You can search through a web search for the Dept of Education in your area. You can see what their requirements are teachers. You can also search for the requirements for your area regarding receiving a teaching license. In some states you get paid more to have one. Some states require you to pass a placement test before you are able to be certified to teach in that particular state..
You should just search for the Dept of Education (DOE) in your state to see what is required to teach...

In Ontario you have to get a BA and then apply to a teachers college, or you must go into a Concurrent Education program (where you take your BA and teaching degree at the same time over 4 years).
A day care teacher has to have a degree from a college, but once getting it, can get a BA from university and then apply to a teachers college.

Google the Education Department in your state and see what the requirements are. Most public colleges/universities offer programs that lead to certification and certification is required in most states - at least for most subjects and definitely for elementary school. It's not just a college degree!

You can go to university, get a degree in education and specialize in either elementary or secondary education.
