If she's mobile and in good health, take her out to lunch and a movie she'd enjoy.
If it's difficult for her to get out, you might bring her a lunch of something she really enjoys, a bouquet of flowers and a nice visit. See if you can help out with any chores or odd jobs that might be getting difficult for her to handle, or maybe run some errands. As people get older, it seems that what they value the most is some of your time and company.

perfume, a nice bracelet, a book, a handmade afghan or quilt, or a painting or something that you have made that you just know she would like or has hinted that she would want in the past.......suprise her and give it to her! also a lot of older people dont want gifts anymore, sometimes just a card will do because it really is the thought that counts.......my fiance's best friends step dad is celebrating his 80th in 2 weeks, and said he wants no gifts at his party, just come for the company and food and if you want to, bring a funny card, since his bday is on st. pattys day.....most older people have worked hard all their lives and have everything they want, but a lot of the younger generation does not hang out with their older relatives anymore, so most of them would just like the company and conversation.

Well I can only speak for something that I have done for someone that age, which was my Mother and she loved it. I went to the Hair Salon where she got her hair done each week, and I paid for her hair to be done, and for her a manicure and pedicure. She loved the pampering she recieved that day and it was a total surprise. The girls that worked there loved it also, they told me it was so much fun watching her face as they told her she was there for a day a pampering and it had all be paid for. They would not tell her who paid for it until my sister and I came to pick her up a few hours later. She was so happy. She recently passed away, and that is a memory I will have forever.

I'm going to remember Diamondi's answer... great idea ! Just make certain she knows what day they will arrive !!! But don't be afraid to give money if she is on a fixed income ( small SS payments each month). believe me, she will be grateful !!

You could buy a gift certificate from a cleaning service to have her home cleaned. Or offer to take her to do errands that she is needing to do if she doesn't drive.
