There is NEVER a cost to get a talent agent. The talent agency pays the actor, once she or he, books an acting job.
Legitimate Talent Agencies work on 10% commission only.
You did not say where in the USA you live, so you will have to ask your actor friends to recommend a Talent Agency so you can try to get an interview with the agency.

So many out there. Just a tip, be vigilant to find one. So many cases involving talent agencies came to sad end. But cheer-up, many talent agencies so famous handling their talents. My cousin is recently discovered by a talent scout, they didn't discuss about cost or something but they first undergo trainings. My impression is good. Here is how it works, first we do some credibility test in our just meet scout. Second we verified his personal data. Aside from the data, he gave us a site for more details.

Any reputable agency with which you sign - will charge you 10 - 20% of whatever you make on the jobs they get for you.
Anybody wanting money from you upfront is a crook - and trying to cash in on your dreams.

I've been searching for an agent, as well. I love drama, just a random thought. Anyway, my friend knows one. I think she's going to be in a movie soon. I dunno. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to her in awhile.
