I really liked the movie a lot, but I just didn't understand it very much. Like, what was the monolith? A wall? A chocolate bar? And what happened to dave at the end? Was he reborn to a baby, or an alien? And then he was inside of the monolith wall thingy. What does that mean? And the scene in which Dave has just killed Hal (The computer) and he is traveling through space. Can anyone explain the multicolored waves, the changing eye color, the ribbons of light and the little thing that looks like your moving really quickly inside of a computer chip? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!?!?!?!?

Ahhh, a great movie. Not easy to figure it out. But I've had nearly 40 years to do so, sooooo....

On a literal level, the monolith is a triggering device set out to guide man's intellectual evolution. It is put on Earth at a critical time in human development. Finding such a perfectly formed structure gives the idea to the early humans that they don't have to use things in nature the way they are, but they can adapt things and made new objects, or tools. This is first manifested by taking a bone and using it to bludgeon an enemy to win access to a water hole. The bone gets tossed into the air, where the time changes to the near future and the bone dissolves into an orbiting nuclear bomb.

The next monolith was burried on the moon. It obviously would not be found until man had the capability for near space travel and lunar excavation. When it is found, it sends out a radio beacon focused on Jupiter. They figure something must be calling out to them to go there.

When they get there, things get a lot more complicated. You will have to figure it out for yourself, but I think it has to do with man evolving into a new being that is part of the great community of the universe. He is now an infant in that world, where time is relative and meaning is harder to comprehend.

On a figurative level, the monolith is symbolic of that which drives humans to advance technologically.

And HAL, is the lurking reminder of what can go wrong when we rely on technology and lose sight of our humanity.

Now watch it a few more times and enjoy!

Hey, it's all symbols that mean whatever you see in them - you know, encountering the unknown broadens our horizons and makes us evolve into somethiing new; the end of one is the beginniing of the other; blah blah... Keep in mind that it was written & filmed in the times when people were much happier and experimenting with all kinds of exciting new drugs.

I'm afraid that the only person who can truly tell us what that movie means is Kubrick himself. Unfortunately, he has gone on to the beyond.
