My daughter is struggling with spelling. Teacher gives out a list of words at the beginning of the week and they're tested at the end of the week. They're given 10 rhyming words, eg bear, care, hair, there etc. I was always rubbish at spelling! Anyone got any tips to help her learn?

break the words down in small sizes
or just get them to repeat the word over and over again
keep testing them urself. and let her no if she made a mistake but dont correct her let her try if she really cant and gets annoyed tring tell her....

i found the best way was writing it down.. ask her to spell it.. if she cant spell it out load then ask her to write it down. but dont tell her the answer till she done it or u no she really cant. maybe give her lil hints

Copying the words, then covering and rewriting is a good strategy to learn words for a spelling test, however children will tend to forget these in their normal writing. One way to improve spelling ability long term is to get her to put the words into context and write a short sentence, or even write sentences with the words in yourself for her to read back because seeing them in context will help them stick after the spelling test. Try to make it into a game by seeing who can come up with the silliest sentence or the sentence with the most words starting with the same letter/sound.
Having said all that the school are making the tests unusually hard by giving rhyming words instead of spelling patterns, (For example by giving all words with the 'oo' sound one week and all words with double 'f' the next.) but there isn't much you can do about that.

Main thing is make it fun. Talk to your child as often as possible about anything and everything watch programs together comment on clothes, colours. I put the names of items around the house on them in coloured labels. Gradually my child learnt spellings without even knowing what he was doing and we put gold stars on all the labels he learnt to spell.
Some companies sell toys that speak to the child with spellings these can be great fun but a little expensive. Word games of any type but scrabble can be good let them make up their own words and see what happens apart from a lot of giggles you may be surprised how much your 7 year old can spell.
Oh and one important thing all of us are different what one learns quickly another will take their time dont rush it.

Get her to look at the list for a while saying each spelling out loud. Then get her to write them down - you read them to her one at a time. Check them, if there are any wrong, ask her to wite each one down 10 times then do the whole written test again 7 check for mistakes. Do this for a couple of days then do some verbal testing at odd moments.
This works for my 6 year old who also struggles with learning the spellings each week.

Spelling doesn`t use logic as many words are not spelled as you would expect. I had trouble myself your best bet tho is to encourage reading buy your daughter books she finds interesting. Spelling is not about thinking but memory hopefully this will help, your question shows how stupid the spelling of words is they all rhyme and all are spelled differently. You should check if your daughter uses hyper logic she may be an indigo child. P.S. you sound a great parent and remember to buy her books go shopping together she`d love that.

get her to write the words out.
First by direct copying.
Then by trying to remember the letters but able to check if she forgets.
Finally, by memory alone.

You get the words on Monday, work over them each evening until the test day.
Don't worry too much if the spelling SEEMS poor because if there was a serious problem with her spelling the Teacher would let you know.

Encouragement is the main thing.
Work the spellings with her.
Don't make too much of the test because that makes it worse.

Good Luck!

I would say get her to learn spelling groups.....for example words that have ee in, words that have oo in words that have ai in words that start with ch etc.

Make it fun, offer a small reward and only spend 10 - 15 mins. max. say three times a week. Play games, where you each have to think of oo sounding words etc. Then she'll get to understand common patterns.

Start with the absolute basics and also always include a word that she can already spell...so at least she'll get that one right.

Hope that helps.

Get a phonetic based speller or phonics book. Most people don't know this because complete phonics was dropped in the school system so long ago, but there are many rules to spelling much like there are rules to reading.
