Look up in the menu bar for the battery icon. Is there an "X" in it? If so, the laptop isn't recognizing the battery. This could be either the battery, or some components inside the computer. If you have a friend with the same kind of laptop, you could try their battery to find out if it still happens with theirs. (If you have a MacBook, you can try a black battery in a white MacBook and vice versa for this test.) In either case, make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store if you have one, or else call AppleCare at (1-800-APL-CARE if you're in the US). You're still under warranty, so get it fixed right away.

if its only a few months old, take it to an Apple Store and ask them. The battery may be defetive or it could be a connection in the computer. Your laptop is under warranty for the first year you own it so if it is a defect you can get it fixed for free. You could also check your "energy saver" settings and see if something is wrong there.

You have probably gotten a bad battery.

A laptop that new should still be under warranty.

Contact apple for your nearest Apple Approved Repair Center.
