This usually overwhelms any speech so it is very difficuly to hear what is being said. Why is this practice so prevalent and why is it thought to be necessary?

All the CSI spin offs are terrible for that. It drives me nuts. So i prefer to keep the box off. Unless Top Gear is on of course. No such problems there!

Can't explain why they do it but it is really annoying. They overdo it on the volume of music in movies too. I've started turning the volume down and the closed-captioning on. It's kind of interesting sometimes because the words coming up on the screen don't always match what's being said.

Yeah I noticed that and for the adverts! you turn the sound down late at night considering your neighbours then when you're dozing off in front of the fire in your fav' chair the programme breaks for the ads' and suddenly a damned advert jingle wakens half the street lol

I don't know why they do it because you end up struggling to understand what is going on and then you turn over. They must all be doing it because other programmes do it and they tend to copy each other with these trends.

Really winds me up as well, the only reason I can think of why they do this is because the content of most TV these days is rubbish.
