I think, if they exist, they're interdimensional beings and very possibly connected to modern UFO/ET lore. I did a lot of work for two college essays on the subject of faerie/Trickster lore and how it related to modern lore as well as evolving lore concerning aliens.
according to lore, faeries were "airy" and "ethereal" with malleable forms. how they were seen by mortals was a combination of how they wanted to be seen and how one expected to see them.
as to having seen one, I have vivid memories of when younger playing with little white faeries around my house, chasing after them and catching them. I remember first mistaking them for bugs until I caught one and clearly saw the form of a pure white humanoid with wings and flowing hair. after I accidentally injured one I hardly saw them anymore, the last one I saw was a single one flying into an old tree about 4 years ago.

They are tasty and stay crunchy in milk. Just kiddin. Some folklorists claim that they are still around and do the same things they always have. Some claim the modern 'alien abduction' cases and UFO's have a lot in common with the activities and characteristics of the old time Fair Folk. Missing time, the child stealing, the marriages and taking of genetic material, strange lights that dance over fields, crop formations. There are several books about this.

I'd like to believe in fairies. It is said that fairies used corgis as their steads and at night when humans turn their dogs out for a bit they still come back to play with them. I accuse my own dogs of playing with the fairies when they are slow to show their foxy faces after I hollar at them to come in. Do you like fairies?

I've never meet anyone who has seen one, but every culture has stories about little people.

hmmm....interesting answers...most people when asked about faeries here in YA say something like "grow up" or "they don't exist"
well, they exist but...they are like spirits or something, they're invisible. that's what I think
