Try ice, and for what doesen't come off, use a product like goo-gone.

Liquid nitrogen.....or dry ice....this will harden the gum...then you can either break it with wire cutters or pliers...and vacuum the bits and pieces....also have a set of scissors ready, you may need to slighty trim the carpet that is stuck.

Get some very hot water and dap it with a towel until very soft.
Watch your hands. And then comb or brush it out.
