It was never intended to be so, but was the unintended artifact of not thinking deeply enough when they wrote the Constitution.
All the the true democrats, like Jefferson, Madison, Franklin etc morned and fought against the rise of parties, but without a major change in the Constitution, two parties and only two parties are required, and any attempt to do otherwise loses.
By having a "Winner take all" election system a large minority would always be unrepresented, so if even a few "Naderites" did not help the group they were closest to on a close election, they helped the ones they were most opposed to.
This has caused the majority of people to not vote in favor of their interests because of some hot button issue that their Predators use to get them to vote against their general interests, and assures that nobody will represent them completely.
Of late the Gang Of Predators has raised this to a fine art.

Shortly after the American Revolution, there were two very different schools of thought.
One group wanted a strong central government--a nation--that could bind the states together as one, negotiate with other countries, combine defenses, monetary systems, etc. (Some of these ideas developed over time).
The other group thought of the United States as just that--several separate, autonomous countries...held together by a similar desire for certain freedoms (freedom from taxation, freedom to exercise religion, etc). This group wanted the federal government to be ALMOST non-existent.
These two opposing points of view became the early political parties. Washington and Jefferson are often viewed as the fathers of the parties.
