Many middle schools in the USA are 6-7-8. Most movies are made in the USA. Movies do not represent reality so sometimes they take artistic liberty as well.

In most educational circles, the newest thinking calls grades 5-8 Middle Level and their school is called a Middle School. Students at this age level have unique issues to deal with that make them different than elementary students or high school students. The idea of a Junior High School, which implies that is like high school but younger, is no longer considered accurate. Ten to 14 year olds are not junior anything. They are a group unto themselves and should have educational philosophies and programming designed just for them. And now they do, in a well run Middle School.

When I went to middle school (around 1998, I think), my middle school was 6-8. It happens in some districts and not in others. It just depends on the sizes of the schools and of the respective grades.

In the US, it is typical for most school districts to have elementary schools Kindergarten through 5th grade, middle school 6th through 8th grade, and high school 9th through 12th grade. You are probably reading books or watching tv shows that are based on the American school systems.
