Take any verb. Add "er" to the end of it. You now have a noun which means "someone or something that does the verb". So a computer is not just the machine you have in front of you, but it is anything that can compute. An abacus was the first nonhuman computer, so it is often considered the first computer.

Here are a couple of quotes from some online sources that I located for you to look at,

"The abacus was used as a mathematical model for early electronic computers and so technically it was 'the first handheld'. It is not a calculator in the sense we use it today with buttons and a screen, which lay comfortably on the palm of your hand. Though the abacus WAS the first computing device to be digital and manually operated.

The primary purpose of the abacus was not to perform actual computations, but to provide a quick means of storing numbers during a calculation. "

Hardware is a general term that refers to the physical artifacts of a technology. It may also mean the physical components of a computer system, in the form of computer hardware. Hardware historically meant the metal parts and fittings that were used to make wooden products stronger, more functional, longer lasting and easier to fabricate or assemble. In modern usage it includes equipment such as keys, locks, hinges, latches, corners, handles, wire, chains, plumbing supplies, tools, utensils, cutlery and machine parts, especially when they are made of metal. Thus ABACUS is hardware as it is a physical ,tangible part of a computer system (used for arithmetic operations for numbers).
