My only suggestion is to go to a local pound or a shelter. Look at some of the dogs on Petfinder.com in you area. Take your kids with you and let them and a Shelter Employee help you pick out the dog. Its much more personal than picking everyone elses favorite breed. If it was up to me I would tell you to get an American Pit Bull Terrier or Staffordshire Terrier.

The last and most important part about this is that you will save a dog from being put to sleep and give it another shot at life. Mutts can be great dogs, some times even better than a "Pure Bred"

And excellent choice would be the Golden Retriever, a dog known for its kindness with little kids and its patience. The golden doesn't shed at much either but he can grow to large sizes and the golden needs constant care and a large house plus garden to live in. Another choice would be the poodle, which doesn't shed very much but can be difficult with kids. Yorkshire terriers don't shed much either, but can be problematic. Labradoodles are my personal favorite--they are cute, small and don't shed. And they also are good with kids.

The smallest I'd go for is the Welsh Pembroke Corgi. They're very sweet dogs! You can also try a mixed breed lab; they're usually smaller than purebred labs, depending on what the other breed(s) are mixed in. They do shed some, but with brushing it's very managable. And labs are great with kids. I'd stay away from spaniels and terriers, as they can be nippers.

Well, poodles come in many sizes and don't shed. They're very smart and eager to learn, and love kids. Miniatures are a good size (not tiny, not huge). If you look them up on the web, I'm sure you'll find some good information.

Another peice of advice: female dogs are usually less agressive.

I strongly prefer a beagle. We had one and wow those are the most lovable, gentle, adorable dogs. I think your kids will fall in love with one. The only thing about them is they don't do as you say every time. They are a dog that kinda just does what they want to do. And if you don't have a fenced back yard you will need to make sure it dosen't run away. I loved my beagle for 9 years and wish he was still here.

Except for the shedding part, I would highly recommend a Siberian Husky. They are smart, mild-mannered and great with kids. I had one while growing up...she was 45 pounds of fun. When she was a pup, got her accustomed to noises like hair dryers and vacuum cleaners, and she let us use both on her. The vacuum was great for when she was shedding.

Good luck, and have fun!

I think you should consider getting a Maltese....they are kind of pricey but they are GREAT family pets...my grandmother has had this breed dog since before i was born and she loves them...they are also the cutest thing i have ever seen.

Try a Walker. They look simialar to a beagle, but they're bigger and very loving! I have one that whenever I get home and open the door on my car, she'll jump in my lap and lick me to death. they are very friendly, and instantly get attached to strangers. If you don't mind bigger dogs, a lab. is also good. Have a good day, bye!

You need a BASENJI they are African hunting dogs but very good with family, they have curled tails big ears and short hair and they don't shed. My first dog was a basenji, and she was the best dog ever I had her from birth-age . she died at 14 AMAZING DOG
