That's not uncommon at all, especially in pet shop varieties of goldfish. How much will turn silver and how far it will turn is completely unpredictable and nothing you do will reverse the color change, it's purely genetic.

This happens as the fish ages, it is not a defect or illness. Sometimes an improved diet and more aeration in the tank will help reverse this problem.

Some petshops colour-feed fish. You should check if thats happened.
Also. How long have you had them? And have you got a new tank? If its a new tank, where was it made and what type of silicon have they used to seal it? The wrong type can kill the fish with fumes, but they do turn a funny shade of grey before they pop their clogs

Most of the time this is to do with lack of light, fish grow to there surroundings. if its dark most of the time their scales become lighter!
You can buy food that helps keep natural colours.
