Stop asking such difficult and boring essay questions.
Ask questions that require a student to think and write their own opinions, NOT just research dead guys and regurgitate information.
That's how they can beat plagiarism - don't give them anything to plagarise.

These are some ways you can catch or avoid plagiarism:
1. Observe the sentences students are making. You can tell if it suddenly changes from the flow of the rest of the essay and that can be suspicious. Or if you know a student who has suddenly started writing in a different writing style/language- that can look fishy.
2. What to do if you think someone is plagiarizing? Easy and simple way:
Take the sentence word for word and put it in quotes on Google search. Easy way to catch if students copy and paste. (Remember to put it in quotation marks though!)
3. When you assign essays from now on, ask each student to include a bibliography or works cited page. That way you can look at the sources to check if they plagiarized or not.
4. Most important tip is to TELL THE STUDENTS. Include the consequences of plagiarism in your syllabus and in every rubric or essay assignment sheet. Tell them how important it is that they do not plagiarize.

I had to research plagiarism 2 years ago for an assignment. It was so surprising that so many people cheat. People hae gone from just taking a peek at others' papers to text messaging answers to other students right across the room. And what's worse, it has become a business now! There are actually sites where you can buy papers that other students have written! Just go to sites like www.schoolsucks.com or search for "buy term paper", and you'll see the madness. It is crazy! My parents and their parents had to write papers, why shouldn't we? Is it because we have the power at our fingertips? I truly don't think so.
Here are some statistics.
*A study by The Center for Academic Integrity found that almost 80% of college students admit to cheating at least once.
*A study conducted by Donald L. McCabe titled Faculty Responses to Academic Dishonesty: The Influence of Honor Codes found that 55% of faculty "would not be willing to devote any real effort to documenting suspected incidents of student cheating".
*A national survey published in Education Week found that 54% of students admitted to plagiarizing from the internet; 74% of students admitted that at least once during the past school year they had engaged in "serious" cheating; and 47% of students believe their teachers sometimes choose to ignore students who are cheating.
Luckily, there is a way for teachers to beat plagiarism using the same internet that kids sometimes use. Look up pages like www.plagiarism.org for more information.
Hope that helps!!

oh! i wish i could remember the website but there is one out there. college professors use it to check for plagiarism. you can put in the paper (scan it and cut and paste it in to their textbox) and the website will do a search to determine if the input has been plagiarized.
do a search on the internet and you may find it. sorry i couldn't be of more help.

I think it is very easy to see. When someone presented a piece of writing that has been copied from someone else work. I used to take an on-line class. As a student I could tell if my classmates writing their own stuff or not. I know my instructor much known it also. To confront someone, that would be hard to do. It is different between professional writing and personal writing. If you in the class with someone, you would get use to their writing. It just like a finger print that you would familiar with everyday. It is as being your own work they copied from. You know it.

It is pretty obvious when people plagiarize....all of the sudden a student starts making sense when he never did before.

There is a program out that all a teacher has to do is put in a sentence and it will tell him/her who wrote it or said it first.
A plagiarist today is dead meat!!!

Use turnitin.com
Have an Honor Code. Students should write "I uphold the honor code" on everything they turn in.

They can't, but they will always tell you that they have been teaching for a long time and that they have programs that can find your essays bla bla bla. Doesn't work. Will never work.
