My husband and I are trying to conceive. This is my first child, but he already has a daughter from a previous marriage. I really like the name Addison Sophia Marvianna Sharpe. He doesn't care for it. Am I selfish to want this name since he got to name his daughter? The name Marvianna (is for my mothers name and his mothers name combined); plus he's Italian and Marvianna is Italian. Thank you for your opinions in advance.

Actually I know for a fact it wasn't an agreement between him and his ex. She said he could name the daughter and he picked the name.

Actually I just found out I'm prego so its not jumping the gun. And, boys don't really run in either of our families, but, its not that I'm not considering boys names. It was just a question about the girl name. Thanks to everyone who had something nice to say! I appreciate all the nice responses.

I understand your way of thinking, but you really should try to pick a name that you both like for your daughter. Why don't you get a list of names that you like and you decide from your list of names, so it is kind of like you are picking it together. I agree it is a nice name, though. I had it in my head that my husband and I were going to name our daughter, Maya. Then he made fun of it... "My uh..car...My uh... dog...My uh... everything! So, I kept saying names I liked until he picked one that he liked too. (So, really I named both daughters! :) Good luck!

First of all, you two need to agree on a name. I can't believe the mother let him solely pick his daughter's name. My kids are Hunter (son) and Camerynn and Kassydee (daughters). My husband and I chose those names together. If it had been left up to me they would have been Kyler, Peightynn, and Haidynn. But my husband is the father and his input mattered. That said, I do like the name Addison, only the Addison I know is called Addi-which I hate. Trust me, picking a name like that will lead to nicknames, so be ready. My daughters are Cammi and Kassy to everyone. Kassy is okay, but I hate Cammi, yet everyone calls her that anyway. Sophia is a pretty name, and of course you want to keep your mother's name in there somewhere, but maybe you two can find a middle ground and compromise. Besides you may end up with a boy instead of a girl, which will bring up a whole other issue! Good luck with your baby-to-be what ever he or she is named!

Addison is a very pretty name, but the 4 names is very long. So Sophia and Marvianna are the two middle names? If you want to honor both of your mothers with Marvianna, why not just cut Sophia then.

I'm sorry but I feel you are jumping the gun a little. You haven't even conceived this baby yet, and already are creating disagreements over it! How do you even know that you will have a baby girl? Perhaps the fact that he already has a daughter makes you wish for one of your own.

At the end of the day the baby belongs to both of you and it's important that you come to an agreement so that there is no resentment between you. When i was pregnant with our second child we spent the whole nine months discussing girl's names before we settled on one that we both liked- Brooke. ( When we announced it, most of our relatived disliked it so there you go!) I too had a name in my head that I really wanted to call my daughter but he wanted something more simple so I used it as a middle name instead. At the end of the day, there are so many more important things to fret about. Just concentrate on having a healthy pregnancy. Good Luck!

I don't think you are being selfish at all. But I do think that the two of you should talk about it more and maybe come up with some kind of agreement. I love the name Addison for a girl, just like on Grey's Anatomy (if you know that show). I also love Sophia.
I think that if you keep discussing it with your husband you might be able to get him to change his mind, just tell him how strongly you feel about naming your daughter this.

Good luck!

I love the name Addison, but I am not crazy about the rest of it. It's kinda long. My husband and I are trying to concieve and we are picking out names togther. get a baby book and everynight go through some names and right down only the ones that you both like and take something from there. That is the only fair way that I could think of for me and my husband both to have some say-so in the name.

There is truth in everyone's answers, women deserve the right to name the child after all they have gone through...and since he got to name the first child its only fair that you get to name the 2nd one...yet, fathers opinions should be considered somewhat. I too like the name Sophia Marvianna Sharpe & agree that using Addison is too long. I never cared for names that included 2 or more "middle" names.

Someone once told me, when considering a name for a child, it should be short enough to fit on a diploma or graduate degree etc. Like the framed documents you see on the office walls in doctor, dentist, & lawyers offices.

Best wishes, have fun "trying to conceive" :-)

I would try and work out an agreement with him. Since the name is quite long, maybe you could pick a part or two or the name and then hear his suggestions. I don't think the name is bad...I like it actually and you can tell it's a strong Italian name, which I like. I would just try and compromise since it is his child too.

Will you call her Addy? That's the name of my cat so I like the name very much. I think Addison Sophia Marvianna Sharpe is a good name, but if your husband doesn't you should try to guilt him into going along with it like telling him you've had your heart set on it for years or that it came to you during a significant romantic moment you and he shared like your first date or something.

i LOVE the names Addison Sophia... you could call her Addie for short, thats so pretty! i'm not big on Marvianna but since its both grandmothers' names combined and i think that is a nice thing to do, its good... at least it goes well with the name you like... Anyway, i think you should compromise with your husband... tell him maybe you want to name her Addison but he could perhaps pick the middle name, as long as it flows well with the other two names... i dont know how you would convince him that what he picked doesn't flow well if you thought it didnt, though...

You two need to agree on the name for this child. If he doesn't like the name, he doesn't like the name. Whether he named a child from a previous marriage or not has nothing to do with right now. Find a name you can agree on. Come on. You have 9+ months to do this. Compromise!
