They would like to think they were the original inhabitants of New Zealand.

There is debate if the Maoriori arrived first or not but like the Maori crossed the Pacific from the Cook Islands, landed briefly on the South Island of NZ and then for some inexplicable reason left for the Chathem Islands. (hundreds of miles to the east of Christchurch, NZ)

Both are thought to have begun in Hawaiki, (modern day Hawaii) but from different Islands.

They migrated from Indonesia area like millions of years ago and settled in New Zeland and became the Maoris. (the native hawaiians and tahitians did the same thing)

Why didn't you just go to the dictionary? You'd have gotten the answer in about 15 seconds.
