My fish, Sushi, always is sleeping when I come into my room. I don't know if it's because hes old or if he is nocturnal.

Sushi is a male betta also. (if that helps)

A lot of species of fish are nocturnal, but some aren't. Tell us what kind of fish Sushi is and we can tell you if he is nocturnal or not.

It depends on the type of fish. Some are nocturnal, some are diurnal, and some just tend to prefer to hang out at the bottom of the tank and aren't very active generally.

Bettas are a good example of a fish that tend to mostly hang around in one place. However, this could also be a sign that his water is too cold or that he has poor water quality.

Betta's are naturally a slow moving and "lazy fish". They will spend most of their time in suspended animation giving to the idea that they may be sleeping. They are by no means nocturnal like some aquarium cats may be. In the wild they spend much of their times in tiny pools or puddles where little movement is needed.

Some fish (especially catfish like my pleco) are nocturnal. Bettas aren't (or shouldn't be!). What is his water temperature? They like warm-tropical from 78-80o. Too high or too low, they become very inactive.

I have a betta in a 5 gallon hex, half filled with water (he's new, so this is a temporary set-up), a light, two silk plants, and a heater. He's always swimming around - I think he just likes the room!
