Despite the fact that it seems logical that pure H20 (distilled water) wouldn't harm us, there is a fair amount of research showing that it can in fact be harmful to drink too much of it.

Apparently the biggest reason is that pure H20 is a reactant which can readily absorb elements from the air, in particular carbon dioxide. When carbon dioxide is absorbed by water, the water becomes acidic. Drinking this water causes the acidity of your blood to increase slightly, which can cause your body to leech nutrients such as calcium and potassium.

Of course, carbonated beverages also have high levels of carbon dioxide in them. This contributes to the acidity of the drinks. And in fact, most people already know that drinks like CocaCola aren't good for you. The reason why they aren't is because they cause your body to leech nutrients such as calcium and potassium-- sound familiar?

Indeed, the same reason why carbonated drinks are bad for you is the same reason why distilled water is bad for you-- because the dissolved carbon dioxide causes it to become acidic.

Non-distilled water does not readily dissolve carbon dioxide from the air, so is not subject to the same effects, and does not become acidic.

So, it's probably best not to drink distilled water, since long-term use can increase body acidity. Increased body acidity can lead to nutrient deficiencies, and even an increased risk of cardiovascular disease or, as some studies claim, even increase the effects of aging.

No, it is not harmful. However, you need to make sure you are getting all the vitamins and minerals you need through your meals. Distilled water (pure H2O) may cause these to leach out of your body due to diffusion. The pure H2O causes a difference in concentration of the minerals and could cause them to leave your muscles and bones to balance this difference in concentration.

Personal input: I will drink nothing but distilled water. I have my own distillation unit to produce this at home. I also take a daily multiple vitamin as well as other essential mineral supplements. I have blood work done every 6 months and a bone scan every year. I have no evidence of bone loss due to drinking distilled H2O.

Pure H20 is just distilled water. This is the only type of water I drink because our water is hauled in and sits in a tank that has not been cleaned for 20 years. (It's not really that dirty but you should see our rain water tank) No it is not at all harmful because most of our body is made up of water anyways. Although my parents take mineral supplements because we don't get it in our water.
