I'm just starting to get involved with a candle business and all I do is buy the candles from them and sell them so that I get a 100% profit. I was curious as to what are the steps to setting your business up at home to start with and getting advertisement. i even was thinking about mailing my information to people in the local area of my home if anyone knows how to find the address for locals in your area. If you know how or already have done this yourself please give me all the tips and starters for this. Thanks

First of all you need to get a license from your local city hall. All the county/city halls have their own rules for the home based business. So, the first thing you can do is go to your local city hall, get an application form for a home based business license, and at the same time ask them about basic rules for home based business in your area. They also might have some specific rules for keeping the inventory at your home. In my area, they don't let you keep inventory at home, however it may be different in your area. But, you would be able to get that information from your city hall.

Second thing, if you are just starting up a business and don't know how it will go or if you are just trying it for a while, you can do it without getting a license upfront too. The way it works is, do your business as you will do it with a license, and while filling your tax return for that year submit a "Schedule C" form with your tax return, and enter all the sales you have done and all sales tax you have collected and pay the tax collected at that time. It is legal too, as far as I know. And, once you like doing this business and want to continue, just go ahead and get the license from the city hall. And register your fictitious name on www.sunbiz.org. Fictitious name is only required if the business name is different from your name. For example: If your name is Alice, and your business name is "Alice" you won't need to register a fictitious name, but if you business name is "Alice candles" you will need to register fictitious name.

For advertising, if you business is online, you can do online advertising with Google Adwords or Yahoo pay per clicks, but if you business is local home based then bulk mailing would be the way to do it, but it is very expensive. In order to get a mailing list, you can go to your local post office and they can sell you the mailing lists. However, the main cost comes in for printing and mailing the bulk mails. To keep your costs low, go for post card size, single color text on a color or white postcard size paper, so you won't have to pay extra for folding and taping, etc. Post cards are cost effective than any other paper sizes and styles, as per my knowledge.

Hope my answer will help you in starting your business. Good luck. You can also contact me if you may have any additional questions. Thanks.

You would have to sell a lot of candles to be able to afford advertising in any publication. Have you thought about any other business? If you've got your mind set on candles, forget mailing expenses, instead, create a flyer, make copies and deliver them yourself. That's about the only advertising you'll be able to afford here in the beginning.

First of all, to earn a 100% profit means you get them free.

Identity your target market and start letting them get to know you any way you can.

You can get addresses off the 411 type web sites.

Flyers are inexpensive. Drop them at houses.

Put the candles in stores on consignment.

Go to the flea market.

Set up a display in front of the house on the weekends.

Write a column about candles and send to the local papers.

Sell door to door.
