... for use with Alcohol 120% specifically. I am using this software and hardware to make legal backups of my own software for personal use, and am tired of shuffling disks when I want to switch games, and am tired of paying full fare to replace a scratched disk.

The drive doesn't really matter. I have a generic LG 16X DVD+/- R/RW drive and it works fine for making backup copies. Remember that you will likely need a program like AnyDVD running in the background to disable copy protection on the source DVD before you can make a copy.

An alternative option instead of making backup copies is to create a disc image of the DVD and mount it as a virtual drive. That basically takes a portion of your hard disk and makes it a 'simulated' DVD-ROM drive. Your program will think the disc is in the drive, when in fact it is just reading from the hard disc, saving wear and tear on the disc and also running faster. It uses a lot of disc space if you have a large DVD collection, though. WinISO is a good tool for this if you want to try it out. Again, you need AnyDVD running in the background to disable the CP or the iso image will be corrupt.
