And by culture novels I mean his sci-fi stuff.
I think they could make really good movies if they were done right.

BillytheKidd, your right, it would have to be more than one movie - You couldn't condense it into a single movie - And yes Consider Ph. would be a good introduction.
But I would look forward to seeing a movie version of Excession (my favourite book of the series) - One of the main reasons I love these books is the technology - mainly the ships/minds. I would love to see these realised in a movie

Nia AKA Baby Girl, If you haven't read any of his stuff you should give him a try - He's best known for Complicity (which was made into a movie) - alot of people say the best thing he's written is The Wasp Factory - which was his first book (i might agree with that actually..) But I like this guy for his sci-fi books.

Some of them, yes. Player of Games and Consider Phlebas certainly. In fact I think they could be done live-action with CGI.
But I can't imagine how they would do Excession, where most of the conspiracy is revealed in long message board discussions between the ships, and the chronology is also very far from linear.
And if that one's bad, how could anyone possibly film Use of Weapons, with its alternating forward/backward chronology? And you would have to miss the whole subtle way Banks avoided revealing "Zakalwe"'s identity throughout the book until the very last minute.

Consider Phlebas would be a good introduction to non-Banks readers (i.e. most of the rest of the world). Excession would make an awesome animated movie, it is just too visually complex for anything other than a LotR size-budget film. I have to say though it fills me with dread what Hollywood would do to my favourite sci fi book.....
Have you wondered what Look To Windward would look like? I think it is the most filmable of his novels, as it's set mostly in one place & all the flash-backs could be chronologically sequenced.

Yes. Consider Phlebas especially would be good... lots of action.... can imagine the huge miles long orbital ocean cruiser crushing up against the iceberg and them all pegging it away.
Player of Games... less action... so well done in the book.. not sure it would translate to an interesting film... unless it had masterful directing. Use of Weapons..... (my fave)... multi-layered book... again would need masterful expert directing... and you'd expect the average audience to be totally confused if it stayed loyal to the syncing of different timelines in his past to the current. Excession (my 2nd fave).... maybe but again... the excellence of that book is in the minds discussions and plots... rather than full action... but could well be made in to movie. I love all the books... but Consider Phlebas (the first) would be the best action one and ofc best introduction to The Culture for non-reading movie audience.

Phuck me senseless! I would LUV to see Consider Phlebas as an amimated film, I think it would cost far too much done as live action. Feersum Enjin would be another one that would be hot to trot, also Excession would be f*cking awesome. I would like to see it done by the animation team who did Ghost in the Shell and/or Akira.
Are you watching Mr Murazaki?

I'm sure they would, but why mess with such good books? The films are always a poor second to the books.

Yeah! absolutely; great pyschological thrillers- though as his genius is in his writing, I wonder how well this would transfer to the screen?
