From the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt quickly determine if your computer has the "hal.dll" file by typing "dir hal.dll /s" at the prompt. If the computer returns a "File not found" message, the hal.dll has been deleted.
To recover this file boot the Windows operating system CD and choose the option to "restore", "repair", or "recover". This option will prompt you for the Windows installation to use, the administrators password and will allow you to restore the proper file. At the MS-DOS prompt type the below command.
expand x:\i386\hal.dl_ y:\windows\system32\

hal.dll is not malware, it is required for the machine to boot up. "Access is Denied" means that the current file is either in use or you do not have the correct privileges to access the file. If you can get a hold of a copy of ERD Commander 2005, its a third party software that will allow you access your files and it will help you in recovering any dead machine.

Here's the press release:
"ERD Commander 2005 boots dead systems directly from CD into a Windows-like repair environment. You'll have full access to the dead system's volumes, so you can diagnose and repair problems using tools located on the ERD Commander 2005 Start menu."

I had this same error, I used a copy of ERD Commander that I borrowed from a friend, it was either this or repair/reinstall Windows.

One Windows XP CD and two computers? hmmm...

"Access denied" usually means that the DLL is currently in use (running). Secondly, hall.dll doesn't sound like a real XP file, you likely have malware on your PC.

IMHO, back up your personal data, then re-install XP on the newer PC and go back to an older version of Windows on the older PC, or try Kubuntu on it. No more malware!!!

turn off the computer -- back on and hold the control key down during reboot. Under bios settings or advance bios settings (depends upon which chip you have) select "boot from disk" or "boot from floppy" as opposed to "boot from HDD" save the settings and exit - insert cd in the drive and windows will eventually ask you if you want to overwrite or rewrite - or repair -- chose repair. after windows does it's thing reboot and change the bios settings back to boot from HDD.

You can try a repair by selecting the repair option when you insert the XP disk. Otherwise you will need to reboot. Windows will not let you modify the system files. If you want to modify the system files get a better operating system such as kubuntu at www.kubuntu.org

usually, with this error...your boot.ini file is corrupt or invalid....have you been doing a lot of un/installing and/or partitioning...this is usually the culprit but could be any number of things
you can try creating a new boot.ini file and save it on a floppy, anlong with the ntldr and ntdetect files from the installation cd

just put these 3 files on a floppy and try to boot from floppy
info on boot.ini http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022

One way would be to go create an Ultimate Windows boot CD on your other computer. http://www.ubcd4win.com/

Put it in the drive and use it to boot on the broken computer and then you can copy whatever you need.
