Season your cast iron skillet this way.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Lower both oven racks to bottom positions-line lower rack with foil to catch drippings.
Wash skillet inside and out with mild detergent using a stiff brush.
Rince and towel dry.
Spread a thin coat of melted solid shortening all over skillet including handle (both inside and outside).
Place skillet on top rack.
Bake for 1 hour. Turn oven off and leave skillet in oven until cool.
Do not store lids on pots to all air curculation.
Do not wash skillet with soap or you will need to re-season.

Hope this helps.

Honey you have to "season" your pan. You must not be from the South!
Rub "olive oil" /"almond oil"/"peanut oil" into the pan. Not veggie or corn oil because for some reason it becomes rancid.
Place the skillet in the oven at about 200 degrees for 15min.
Then turn the oven off & let the pan stay in the oven til it cools. remove the pan, rub in excess oil w/ paper towel.
I store my iron skillets in the oven actually when I am not using them.
Do this a couple of times and then your pan will be "seasoned" when it becomes non-stick & black. Takes about a month.

first, clean the sucker off with 1200 grit sandpaper.....then use a steel wool pad like SOS.....then you must stick it in the oven at 400 degrees and grow an oxide layer (1-2 hours)......this will protect your skillet from rusting...

Once cooled off, get some veggie oil and rub it in with a paper towel. I use Olive oil...but that's just me.

I also store mine in the oven it helps keep rust away becaus eof the warmth and lack of humidity.

Iron skillets will rust if they are not regularly used and seasoned. the attached website tells you how.

Don't ever use soap, and always put it on the burner, with heat, to dry it. They are non-stick, with care.
