I think that school cafeterias rely too heavily on unhealthy foods like french fries, pizzas, and burgers. Sure they usually offer a healthier alternative but how many teens will choose a salad over a burger? Not many that I know. There should be regulations in place to ensure that cafeterias are not serving a disproportionate amount of greasy fried foods. Maybe limiting fried foods to 2 choices, eliminating candy bars and sodas altogether, and adding many more healthy choices like fresh fruits, vegetables, and granola bars. There is a reason that so many kids these days are overweight. We need to nip these things in the bud.

a school lunch should be healthy and provide sufficient energy to help the child get through the day, filling them up with empty calories (lots of sugar and fat) wont help them concentrate through the afternoon! a school lunch box can include treats, but should also have fruit and or vegetables (cut up carrots, celery and the like), a sandwich or wrap which includes a protein serve (cold meat, cheese etc) and maybe salad, yoghurt can be included if it can be kept sufficiently cold, and cordial or water to drink (better for thirst than fruit juice or carbonated drinks). having said that i work in a multicultural school and kids come with sushi, salads and various pastries (savoury) which are also good choices. hope this helps good luck

it is definetly important, but nutrition is lacking. i mean at my school the week consists of chicken nuggets, dominos pizza, cheesy mozzarellas sticks, fries, and anything else you can name that is greesy. every school claims to have nutritious and healthy food, but the only healthy food i see is a week old tuna salad and a pathetic looking salad at the back of the counter.i know schools are starting to improve, but progress is slow and it should be moving a little faster.i usually bring my lunch due to these factors.
I hope this helps with your project. Good luck!

I think school lunches are absolutely disgusting and the most unhealthy thing you could do to yourself or your child. They have no nutrition, are full of grease and fats, and the cost is outrageous.

its good for students who need it. but the schools no longer really monitor what the children eat. pizza everyday is not healthy. i would choose healthy options for my child in lunches i pack... but the stuff in schools is mass processed...
but crapy food is better then no food.
there are some school systems that are doing organic school lunches though (wisconson i think)

I think it is vital. No one should go eight hours without eating.
