This computer was bought my sons grandfater who just retired from truck driving so i have no information about this gift . just want to get it working for my son.

Ok, just tried to restart and hit the F8 key. The computer asked for my HDD password, which I don't have. How do I get around this? it has windows 98/2000 i can get into setup utility but cant change the hhd password .

Shut down the computer properly, that is going to Start, Run and Shutdown. Wait 30 seconds.

Then hit the button on the Gateway and hold down Key F8, that will start in SAFE mode. The screen will look very light with all the proper Widows icons on it. Click on the MY COMPUTER icon. Click next on CONTROL PANEL In there youl see PASSWORDS. Open that and change the box to eliminate password. Hit OK on bottom of that Password Window.

Then shut down computer properly as ive directed above Restart and it will be gone.

Is this an old version of Windows98, if so it has no more support from Microsoft. You need to upgrade that Win98 to Win XP and that costs about $50 for a one time disc upgrade and most electronic stores or on Ebay.
