We have 2 cats who have used our expensive unfinished oak patio door frame as a scratching post - there are deep scratches and gouges of a good size area with some splintering. Is there any way to repair this damage? Thank you.

The only thing I can think of is to use a wood filler and sand it smooth and then finish it. Maybe time to get them declawed?

UK Builder here, sorry if its unfinished and the scratches are deep then putting any kind of filler in will show. Most 2 pack fillers ( add a hardener such as wood filler ) are designed to be stained, even coloured fillers would show.
You could try sanding or plane the area if the scratches are shallow.
I have spliced pieces into damaged areas ( stuck pieces of the same wood with wood glue ) in the past, you have to make it a tight fit even if the repair stands proud, once it dries you can chisel off the proud piece flat and sand. It is much easier to repair painted, stained or varnished materials.......Good Luck.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

Buy double sided tape and stick it to the place where he is scratching. Cats hate the sticky surface and will not touch it. You may have to put this tape in other places as he may stop this on one spot and then pick another. But stick with it (no pun intended) and you can break him of this habit.
