If I ever hear a tune that I want to know the title or artist, I use my mobile phone to "listen" to it and use a service called Shazam to recognise it. They will then text you back in a few seconds with the song title and artist.

This is how it works: Go to http://www.shazam.com/music/portal/sp/s/media-type/html/user/anon/page/default/template/StartRegistration
and follow the sequence of pages to register your mobile phone number on their site. (It's OK you can choose options to be sure you don't get spam emails or txts.)

Then when you hear a track you want to know about, dial 2580 (all the numbers in the middle column on your mobile keypad) and try to hold the phone near the source of the music for 15-20 seconds. The phone hangs up by itself when it has listened to enough. A few seconds later you'll get a text saying the title of the song and the artist.

It's really cool. It even works in a pub, club or shop where there's a fair bit of other noise. Last time I checked, you could go to the website and buy the track. Also, it only costs (40p or 50p) if it successfully recognises the track.

It works by matching the waveform a database of waveforms, and so doesn't work on live music: only recorded published music.
