This will sound silly to some people, but it's the truth, and it has worked out well for me.

I moved to San Antonio on a whim. I was a juvenile probation officer in Lake County, Indiana - had gotten tired of being a supervisor of a department, and one of my buddies mentioned how he wished he was 18 years old again, he'd move somewhere to play golf all year round. Next day, I put in my notice (Idid give about 4 months notice, because I had zero idea whereI was going)

I lined up a job interview in New Bern, North Carolina (on the coast, north of Myrtle Beach..) Didn't get the job - went to Myrtle for a couple weeks to kill time, and because I was there. My brother in San Antonio called me up and was surprised that I had left Indiana. He said why not San Antonio? Golf all year round here. After evaluating all my options (for 5 seconds) I said OK.

So then I'm in San Antonio - applying for jobs in the criminal justice field. There were two things I did not like right off the bat. (1) With over 9 years experience in the field, in a county with about 12 time the crime rate as San Antonio, the last 2 years as a supervisor, I was only offered entry level jobs (no relatives worked there) and (2) Texas had no concealed handgun carry permits at the time. Probation Officers here either had to get licensed as a peace officer (and receive a disproportionate percentage of the dangerous cases) or illegally carry a gun. (or not carry)

In the end, I saw an add in the paper for real estate training - no sales experience needed. I figured if I was going to start at the bottom of something, why not be a job (1) where I did not feel the need to carry a weapon and (2) where there is a chance to advance financially...

So here I've been for 14 years, and I love it.
