First you need to respect yourself the most. If you can be dragged down then no one can drag you down.
To be taken seriously, don't take yourself too seriously.
I used to hate how the popular kids could seem to get away with things. One guy in my class got drunk, took his parents car (he was 15) and crashed it and hurt one of the girls that was riding with him. Not much happened to him. If it had been myself I would still be in juvie.
The key is likability. There are a few books on it if you are interested.

It's a matter of force of personality... they are relaxed and uninhibited, and they have charm. If you are afraid to get in trouble, or afraid to mess up, you will not "go crazy" or "do something lame".
Most of them are just pretending to not really be inhibited... and their popularity comes from confidence. The guy who suddenly blurts out "ANUS" in the middle of class, everyone likes him because he's daring and doesn't seem to care or be a stick in the mud.
All that being said, I think you need to stick with being yourself. The intelligent people in the class, the wise people around you, do NOT respect people for buffoonery. The people I respected most in school were the quiet ones that most everyone else looked over.
Don't go for theatrics in class or flamboyant behavior just because you want some popularity... just be yourself, and people who are meant to be your friends will find you naturally... and good friends who like you for you are far better than riff-raff who stop liking you the instant you wear a bad outfit.

What is respect? People have different perceptions on what respect is. Some people do not even know what it means. I empathize for the people whom are gullible, naive are taken advantaged of. It seems like the only way to get respect is too resist being walked on.

It's all in your attitude. You have to believe in yourself, people won't take you seriously if you don't. To get "real" respect from someone you have to keep your word when you do or say something, make sure you follow through. They'll know that no matter what they can count on you.

Those people know that they are cool, therefore they have the confidence that whatever they're doing must be cool too. If you exude self-confidence then other people will show confidence in you. Your friends respect you no matter what, even if they don't always take you seriously.

Attitude, personality, character. Evaluate yourself along those three words in relationship to those popular folks, and see where you come up short. But don't fake it--be yourself.

If you give respect, you get respect. If you put out crap, it gets recycled and returned to you in a humungous crap bundle!
