Go to Zillow.com http://www.zillow.com and plug in your address and it will show you the houses near you and how much they have sold.

In my UK experience, a friendly neighbour kept me up to date on the prices houses were fetching. Also here shopkeepers have their ear to the ground. Local property mags. Local pub/bar. Recent immigrants are sharp and alert to these things.
In the US there is a site called Realtor.com that's very detailed and comprehensive.

Look in your local news paper for the property transfer transactions. You will see it there. Plus ou could go to your local town hall. They will have that info there and it is public knowledge.
