The nucleus is the brain of eukaryotic(cells containing a nucleous) cells. It is only present in eukaryotic cells and there is only one of these organelles in each cell. Usually the nucleus is round and is the largest organelle in the cell. It is surrounded by a membrane, called the nuclear envelope, which is similar to the cell membrane that encloses the entire cell. The envelope is riddled with holes, called nuclear pores, that allow specific materials to pass in and out of the nucleus, just like proteins in the cell membrane regulate the movement of molecules in and out of the cell itself. Attached to the nuclear envelope is the endoplasmic reticulum. The nucleus is surrounded by the cytoplasm inside a cell.
The cellular nucleus in a eukaryotic cell can be thought of as the "command center" of the cell and has the following duties amoung others;
Store genes on chromosomes
Organize genes into chromosomes to allow cell division.
Transport regulatory factors & gene products via nuclear pores
Produce messages via mRNA that code for proteins
Produce ribosomes in the nucleolus
Organize the uncoiling of DNA to replicate key genes
DNA is found only in the nucleus
mRNA is shuttled to the ribosomes within the nucleus
This mRNA then goes out to the Ribosomes (internal) or the Endoplasmic Reticulum (external) where the construction of proteins takes place.
The nucleus becomes of great importance during cell division. When a cell divides, chromosomes fold upon themselves, getting wider. The nuclear envelope is able to control the rest of the cell, such as by sending out ATP. The envelope will let molecules like ATP through but will keep other things in or out, so the nucleus is isolated from the cytoplasm.
Nucleaus provides the building blocks for further growth, and produces food precursors for the mitochondria that need it.
