There is a lot that you have not mentioned. Such as your financial standings. If you carry any sort of debt burden, mainly a credit card, send the entire check into the credit card company.

Use the snowball method on paying down credit cards. Let's say there are three credit cards with debts of $4000, $2000, and $1000. The $1000 debt would get paid off first by paying as much as possible towards that specific debt. Take the payment amount that was being used for the $1000 and add it into the payment on the $2000. Once the $3000 is paid off, take the TOTAL that was being paid on the $2000 and add that in with the regular $4000 payment.

On the other hand, if you are debt-free (auto/home loans not withstanding) then considering a financial investment. $1000 isn't much to start playing the stock market but you could add it into a Money market account or other savings account with a decent interest rate.

If I wasn't sure the moment I received it how I wanted to use it AND assuming I wanted to spend it and not put it in long-term savings (for a house, college, car, emergencies, retirement, whatever) or to pay off a debt, I'd put it aside for a situation when I really needed the cash, such as for vacation expenses or something new and something special for my home.

First I would fix up the house and make it all me. Then, I would make sure my family is doing good with money and after that I would get clothes and shoes and school supplies. But I would save about 400 for the bank just in case something goes wrong.

I personally would get a used car. I need some transportation. But if I just wanted to blow it on something I would get a really awesome tattoo or a new look.

I would put have in the bank and then invest the rest, unfortunately the stock market isn't looking very good lately.

I'd donate $100 to a local charity. The other $900 would go toward a new, noisy exhaust system for my car.
