depends!! what was said and by whom and the circumstances etc but at the end of the day we are all human and if it upsets us so much you would have plenty to say to that person or you could say nothing but don't have nothing to do with that person.
i was in a similar situation. I was at work and I was in the back room and heard a colleague slag me off to another colleague and what she said was unfair. well I left it for a couple of days for the dust to settle and when i manage to get the person on their own i told them in a jovial manner that when you are in the back room no one seems to be aware that you are there and the stuff i have heard while there, you would not believe. well the look on her face was priceless and full of shame!!!

you really shouldnt of listened but if they had something to say about you they should of said it to you rather then gossiping behind your back. ask them about it and why they said it. dont tell your family or the people who gossiped will abandon you if they get involved or maybe you should find friends who dont have a problem with you or your family.

I would I pretend I didn't hear anything whether it was negative or positive because that was private conversation. If they wanted me to know they would have told me. In that case I would deal with them accordingly. Words are just words don't let small stuff get to you let bygones be bygones.Life is too short to worry about who is talking about you.

Well if you know that you were going to here something that you may not have wanted to then you shouldn't have been listening, however if you knew who it was that said such things then perhaps you should confront them about it, especially if it were someone with whom you were close

Don't confront that person immeaditaly and ask them why they said that. If you want to be sneeky, then you woulden't want to blow your cover by asking them that question. I would tell someone that you trust what that person said, and who said it.
If the person that you tell thinks that you should take action then by all means, take action.

I would confront them, but not tell your family if it's about them. Try to talk everything out with them and tell them like you mean it, "Don't talk about me/my family like that." And just walk away, remember, show them who's boss and DON'T GET VIOLENT!
