Especially gay and lesbian hate crimes. I'm an attorney for a victims rights organization and we would like to get more information in order to serve this population.

Each state has an office of human rights, usually situated in the Office of the Attorney General of that state. State and Federal crimes sometimes differ with many states not making a crime against a gay or lesbian a hate crime, or set the standard higher that a simple crime that has a gay victim is not a hate crime there has to be overt evidence indicating that the crime occurred soley because of sexual orientation. Otherwise the crimes are prosecuted as regular assaults or whatever. I have seen a lot of assaults betweeen straights and gays that started in club settings not make it through the hate crime process. The US Office of Victim's of Crime offers a lot of regional training for victim advocates of all crimes and usually there is a block of training dealing with gender based crimes. OVC is located within the US DOJ and you can find it by seaching the DOJ website and then the OVC website. Good luck.
