You could discuss many things when you are talking about a book. You could discuss which character you relate to the most and the reasons why. You could also discuss specific imagery. If you are reading something that was written in a different era, discuss how it relates to modern day. For example, why do we still read Romeo and Juliet? Not only is it a tale about love that nothing can stop.....but ever kid has felt like their parents are against them.

Really use the internet to research the book if you are stuck! Just DO NOT COPY OFF OF THE INTERNET! Trust me....your teachers can tell. I know because I am a teacher.

I like talking about personal reactions to the book. Did I love it, hate it. Was I moved. Did I connect. Could I put it down. Was it boring. Was it the 'best book ever.' Did it make me think. Would I read it again. Do I want to buy it. Is it a book I'd want to recommend to all of my friends.

Something more objective that you could talk about is the style of the novel. Was it first person, third person...did the author use foreshadowing...and I suppose you could even explore if there was any symbolism in it if you want to go that route...how descriptive was the writer...was it character-focused or plot-focused...etc.

When I have had to discuss books my personal favorite if it is fiction, is going in depth about characters. Discuss their motives, struggles, personalities and so on. In fiction, characters are the essence. Also location sometimes plays a very key role in a work of fiction, as does time. For example Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five jumps all around to different times, places and so on and this is an integral part of the book. Hope this helps!
