Uh, the first answerer is exactly wrong. He told you how to convert cm to m. To converm cm^-1 to m^-1 (i.e. inverse cm to inverse m, presumably you're talking infrared or radio spectroscopy here) you MULTIPLY by 100, not divide.
If you get confused with these types of conversions, b/c they're not very common, think of it this way. If something is 1 cm long, then it's 1/100 of a meter long. But cm^-1 is "per cm" and m^-1 is "per m." If something occurs only once "per cm" then it would occur 100 times in a meter. That's why you multiply, not divide.

This unit is of the frequency that is used in infra-red spectroscopy.
It means that you have many waves (of frequency) for centimeter, it means number of wave.
If you will have a meter, you will have one hundred times more waves than in one centimeter, so if the band of infrared is in 1600 cm-¹, you can say 160000 m-¹.

1m = 100cm..therefore, you divide the number you have in cm by 100 to convert it into m.
