It's hard to find, but see if you can get a pelleted hamster diet instead of formulas with a lot of seeds in it. Seeds and peanuts should only be given as occasional treats. There's really not much need to wean him off his old diet, but you can gradually start adding pellets to the food and subtracting the seeds until there is just pellet diet left. Seeds are very fatty and don't really provide the complete nutrition. My little mouse Jane was eating too many treats such as millet and peanuts and not her pellet diet, and got a little chunky, too. But after taking away the extras, she slimmed back down. Good luck!!

there are things that might help:
1. get a bigger cage. ask your local petstore (perverably someone who has worked there over a year)
2. diet food. hard to find but will help
3. get an excerise ball if you dont have one. Let him run around for about 15-20min a day.
4. do you have a wheel inside his cage? if not. get one (though im sure you already do)
5. Fresh fuits a veggies make good food for little hammies! (mine likes strawberries, bannanas, carrots, and his favorite, apples!) Dont give him TOO much though cause they can digest it enough. It should only be 10% of his diet. And can cause diareah. I suggest once- twice a week. Keep in seperate food dish and be sure to take it out 4 hours after in their or it will spoil!!! (cut into small peices)
6. also remeber, hamsters are horders which means they have pouches in their cheeks to store food. He will run and hide it away from you under the bedding. Just because there is no food in the food dish does not nessicarily mean he is out.
7. buy vitamin drops at a pet store to put in your little hammies water.
Hope i helped and good luck!!

Does your hammy have a wheel in his cage? Ya know the kind that he can run on all night and keeps everyone awake. Try a hamster ball. Has an opening to put the little bugger in, then close it. He can safely run all over the house in this. They love both of these toys. I have had many hammies and never have heard of this. But, mine also ran all night in their wheel. Look at your local pet shop. What are you feeding him? Regular food for hamsters? You can't stop feeding him but try the above for exercise. Feed only regular hamster food.

I doubt that your hamster is 'overweight' since he does get exercise, and probably 'enough exercise' ... if you are feeding him a good 'hamster food' every day, and 'limit' his treats to the amount he can 'stuff into his jaws' once a day, then your hamster is 'fine' and you may simply need to get him 'bigger tubes' and possibly even a larger cage. Most hamsters are actually 'miniature hamsters' and you may have bought a 'small one' (a 'baby one' and it grew up to be a 'normal sized hamster' which is actually a bit 'larger and heavier' than most that are sold as pets these days.

At the pet store, they have diet hamster and gerbil food and it looks like big pellets, just give him some of that and let him run around on the ground when you come home. Also, hamsters naturally look "fat" or chuby becasue they are so small, that they need to develop fat to insulate their body and that's why they're very fury too.

Is your hamster a syrian? if so then dont worry too much as they can grow to quite a size. My hamster, harrie, is getting on the large size. my husband loves feeding him hazel nuts and brazil nuts and he adores choc drops, but now we only feed him fresh fruit or veg for treats ( he loves sweetcorn, brocolli and mushrooms!) and we make sure he gets plenty of exercise out side of the cage each day. So carry on feeding him his normal hamster mix and a chew bar for his teeth, but cut down on any naughty treats you may be feeding him with.
