On May 7, 1915 the Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine, the U-20. A second explosion followed shortly thereafter, and the ship sank in only 18 minutes. The disaster did not provoke the United States into entering the First World War, but it did turn neutral sentiments against Germany. Some two years later, when the United States did enter the conflict, it was squarely on the side of the Allies.
