One thing to note:
When the Repug Senators are a majority in power, Bush keeps making boo-boos on foreign policies, refuses to make changes, and keeps in perpectual denial of his mistakes
and
When the Democrat Senators are in power, Bush becomes more willing to see his mistakes and is willing to make some changes.
Also, with more Democrat control over House and Congress, so many cover ups are being exposed, e.g. the shocking relevation of Walter Reed's situation and the dark secrets to how the Iraq War was being pushed through manipulated intelligence!

You could obviously say that Dem's are liberal and Rep's are conservative, but today, it seems that their values are a lot closer than people would like. Of course they like to differentiate themselves with "key" issues such as abortion, death penalty etc. People seem to be voting less for values and more for who they like more or what political affiliation they have.
And about the "for vs against war in Iraq", I believe Dem's voted in favor last I checked. They are only now removing themselves from the issue because it turned badly and to make Bush look bad. This coming from a Bush hater, please find real reasons to bash on him, there are plenty without inventing.

Democrats lean to the left. Much of their ideology of current is a sort of mimeme of Dialectical Materialism while at the same time, a throwback to select leftist ideals.
Republicans lean to the right. Much of their ideology is about preserving particular values while preventing others from being adopted. They are more traditional.

The Demoncrat Party is a bunch of theophobic baby killers that think that choosing to engage in a lifestyle of homosexual behavior is socially acceptable while Republicans stand for a strong family and thus nation.

LIBERALS = Higher taxes, abortions for all, and United Nations approval before defending our national security.
REPUBLICANS = Lower taxes, laws against mothers murdering their unborn babies, and defending our country whether the old men in Europe like it or not!
